Observatory on Mt. Skinakas

On Skinakas Peak of Mt. Psiloritis, at an altitude of 1750m, stands Skinakas Observatory (http://skinakas.physics. uoc.gr/), which has three telescopes with diameters of 1.3m, 0.6m and 0.3m, respectively. The 0.6m diameter telescope is shared by the University of Crete and the University of Tuebingen. Skinakas Observatory is staffed by the Astrophysics Group of the University of
Crete and the Foundation for Research & Technology and can be visited during summer months, one Sunday per month. If you visit Skinakas Observatory on one of its open-to-the-public days,
make sure you are dressed for the weather and armed with patience, as the turnout is usually quite large! Skinakas Observatory has established the 1st Observational Astrophysics [Asteroscholeio] on Crete. It is a place that promotes knowledge and information about Astrophysics and Astronomy, thus contributing to the enrichment, upgrading and further development of knowledge, through the design and implementation of special educational programmes, activities, and events.
