Anogeia has a long and rich musical tradition rooted in ancient Greek and Byzantine music and enriched by the cultural wealth of the broader eastern Mediterranean region. The most famous Anogeian musician is Nikos Xylouris, the “Archangel” of Cretan music, who died young at the prime of his creativity. The heavy legacy of the musical tradition of Anogeia continues with numerous contemporary artists who take Cretan music one step further every day. Music in Anogeia – and on Crete in general – is directly linked to dancing. Apart from the basic Cretan dances (pentozalis, pidichtos, sousta, syrtos) there are several local variations, such as the Anogeian-step pidichtos with jig-like steps, which has its roots in the ancient Pyrrhic war dance. It goes without saying that there is no Anogeian not knowing how to dance these traditional dances! Particularly in Anogeia, the dances are a ritual with specific, unwritten rules that everyone still respects!
